First setup
On first launch macOS may ask for Camera and Microphone permission. They are required to display video sources, analyze movement, capture audio and record the final PROGRAM output.
Quick start
- Connect or select a camera.
- Create one or more shots/crops from the selected source.
- Return to General Director to see the final PROGRAM.
- Optionally enable Autopilot to automate scene changes according to movement and your timing rules.
- With multiple active cameras, you can also enable automatic camera switching.
- Select the audio source independently from the camera on air.
- Press REC to record the PROGRAM output.
Frequently asked questions
My camera does not appear
Make sure it is connected, not in use by another app, and that Castly Director has Camera permission in System Settings → Privacy & Security. For USB cameras, also try a direct Mac port or a powered hub.
I cannot hear or see the microphone level
Check the selected source in the Audio section and macOS Microphone permission. Audio is independent from the active camera: you can use the built-in microphone, a camera, or an external audio interface.
How does Autopilot work?
Autopilot analyzes movement inside the scenes you created and decides when to change shots while respecting the configured sensitivity and timing. A manual TAKE always has priority.
What are WIDE Duration and Scene Time?
When WIDE Duration is enabled, the WIDE shot remains protected for the selected time. Scene Time is the overall window dedicated to crops before returning to WIDE. Example: WIDE 20 s → scenes 10 s → WIDE.
Can I use cameras with different frame rates?
Yes. Castly Director handles source frame rates separately from the PROGRAM frame rate. Available resolutions and fps depend on the formats actually exposed by each camera.
Where are recordings saved?
You can choose the destination folder. Recordings are stored locally on your Mac and are not automatically uploaded to Castly servers.
How do I change language?
The app supports Italian and English. Your in-app selection is remembered and remains active on future launches until you change it.
macOS permissions
You can review or change permissions in System Settings → Privacy & Security. If Camera or Microphone access is disabled, the related app features cannot operate correctly.
